Foxit PDF Editor provides an AI-powered accessibility tool that identifies formulas already tagged in the PDF, converts them to Mathematical Markup Language (MathML, an XML-based markup language that allows assistive technologies to interpret and navigate mathematical equations and symbols),and embeds the MathML into the document’s tag structure. This allows assistive technologies to access semantic math content while the visual appearance of the formula remains unchanged.
- Open the PDF that contains tagged mathematical content.
- Click Accessibility > Formula to MathML.
- The Formula to MathML dialog box opens. The Source Formula Pool on the left displays formulas detected in the PDF, and the Conversion Result on the right shows the generated MathML along with a preview of the converted formula.
- Review the Detected Formula List to see which formulas were found and whether they already contain MathML. The Formula Preview above the list renders the selected formula visually.
- Select a formula from the Detected Formula List. Use the formula preview above to confirm you’ve selected the correct formula.
- Click the Convert to MathML (AI) button to run the conversion for the selected formula. After conversion, the generated MathML appears in the Editable MathML Source Code box, and the Converted Formula Preview box displays the converted formula.
Inspect the Editable MathML Source Code box for accuracy.
You can manually correct the MathML directly in this box if needed. You can also copy, paste, and delete MathML blocks using the buttons above the code box. Click the Refresh button next to the Converted Formula Preview box to update the preview after making changes.
- When everything looks correct, click the Apply Selection button to embed the MathML into the PDF’s tag structure for the selected formula.
