Security Settings for Non-PDF Attachments

By Cynthia, 7 December, 2025

Your PDF files or PDF portfolios may contain non-PDF attachments or component files, such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or text files. Foxit PDF Editor allows you to open non-PDF attachments and component files with the supported applications installed on your computer if you trust the documents. You can go to File > Preferences > Trust Manager, and specify the following options in the PDF File Attachments group to control the permissions for opening non-PDF attachments and component files with their associated applications.

  • Allow opening of non-PDF file attachments with external applications: Specify whether to allow non-PDF attachments and component files to be opened with their associated applications. If this option is checked, Foxit PDF Editor will display dialog boxes for you to choose whether to trust the document (if the Safe Reading Mode is enabled) and how to open a document of the same type when you try to open a non-PDF attachment or component file. If you uncheck this option, your access will be denied and you will be prompted that the file cannot be accessed due to your security settings when you try to open a non-PDF attachment or component file.
  • Restore the default list of allowed and disallowed file attachment types: The “Restore” button will be available if you have changed the default settings. Clicking the “Restore” button will reset the security settings for file attachments to the original state, including the settings you specified in the Open File Attachment dialogAttachment Panel, and registry.

Tip: You can also specify the settings about how to open an attachment or component file of a certain type via the Attachments panel. For more information, please refer to “Security settings for attachments”.
