Open an attachment

By Cynthia, 1 December, 2025
  1. Double-click an attachment. Or select the attachment and click the Open button in the Attachments panel.

Tip: For an attachment as a comment, you can also do the following to open it:

    1) Select the Hand command, the Select Annotation command, or the File command in the Comment tab.

    2) Double-click the File Attachment icon .

  2. For attachments in PDF format, Foxit PDF Editor will open them directly if the Safe Reading Mode is disabled. If you have enabled the Safe Reading Mode, a warning message will pop up. Choose an option about how to trust the document, and click Trust to continue. (Tip: If you are unsure whether the document is safe, click Not Trust to interrupt the operation and avoid potential risks.)

For non-PDF attachments (e.g., TXT file):

  • If you restrict the opening of non-PDF attachments with external applications, Foxit PDF Editor will prompt you that the file cannot be accessed due to your security settings. If you trust the document and want to open it, please change the settings in Trust Manager preferences or from the Attachment panel. For more information, please refer to “Security Settings for Non-PDF Attachments” and “Security settings for attachments”.
  • If you have enabled Foxit PDF Editor to open non-PDF attachments with their associated applications, choose the option regarding how to trust the document (if the Safe Reading Mode is enabled), and click Trust to continue. (Tip: If you are unsure whether the document is safe, click Not Trust to interrupt the operation and avoid potential risks.) Then select any of the following options, and click OK in the Open File Attachment dialog box.
    • Open the file attachment – Open this file attachment and the dialog box will always pop up when you try to open a file attachment.
    • Always allow opening file attachments of this type – Open this file attachment, and add the file type to the whitelist. Then the files of this type will be opened directly in the future until you change the security settings.
    • Never allow opening file attachments of this type – Forbid to open the file attachments of this type, and add the file type to the blacklist. Whenever you try to open an attachment, the files of this type will be forbidden to open and you’ll be prompted that “This file could not be accessed due to your security settings.” You can follow the steps in “Security settings for attachments” to change the security settings if necessary.
