The Cross Reference feature is used to create a group of linked cross-references, and clicking on each cross-reference jumps to its next one in the group in the order you created them (Clicking on the last one in the group jumps the first one.). For example, you can use linked cross-references to link a text string to a paragraph or chart that appears elsewhere in the document. With this feature, you can quickly and easily navigate among multiple locations in a PDF file with one click, which can be helpful if you are working on a long document.
To create and manage cross-references, do the following:
- Choose Edit > Cross Reference, or click the
icon at the top of the Cross References panel in the navigation pane. - The cursor changes into the icon of Cross Reference
. Position the cursor on the place you want to add a cross-reference, and drag your mouse button to draw an area (or simply click on the page to create a cross-reference with a default size).
A box appears under the area for you to name the label that appears on the cross-reference. If necessary, select Set current zoom on the box to remember the current view magnification so the view and zoom on the page will change to the current view magnification when you click on the cross-references in the document.
Tip: If you need to discard the placement of the cross-reference and exit the cross-reference creation, simply hit the ESC key, or right-click anywhere and choose Cancel creating.
- Then the cursor will be changed into a shape with the appearance preview of the cross-reference you specified in Step 2. And you just need to click at the desired location to place the second cross-reference. The second cross-reference has the same appearance as the first one. Repeat the steps above to add more linked cross-references as needed.
- When the creation is completed, right-click anywhere in the document and choose Complete creating. Or when you are creating the last cross-reference, double-click at the desired location to complete the creation.
- All the linked cross-references you create will be listed in the Cross References panel in groups. (Tip: Cross-references have almost the same properties as a Push Button form field, and are also listed in the Fields panel in the navigation pane. See also Set Push Button Properties.)
(Optional) You can move, resize, or delete cross-references in the document with the Select Annotation command or the Cross Reference command. See also Push Button.
Notes:
1) If a group of cross-references only contains two cross-references, deleting either one removes the whole group of cross-references.
2) When you right-click one of cross-references in a group with the Cross Reference command and choose All other pages with [The name of the cross-reference] from the context menu, a sub-menu shows with a list of page numbers indicating where the rest of the cross-references in the same group are located. You can select a specific page number from the list to go to that page.
(Optional) You can add more cross-references to an existing group of cross-references by doing the following:
1) Right-click one cross-reference of the group (e.g., R-02.1) in the Cross References panel and choose Add Cross Reference Links from the context menu (or right-click the cross-reference with the Cross Reference command in the document and choose Add Cross Reference Links from the context menu).
2) Add cross-references at the desired locations in the document. The newly added cross-references will have the same appearance as the selected cross-reference (i.e., R-02.1) and be listed in the Cross References panel.
- (Optional) You can perform more tasks in the Cross References panel as required.
- Click the
icon and then you can create cross-references in the document. - Click the
icon to remove the selected cross-references. - Clicking the “Go to the selected cross reference”
icon highlights the cross-reference in the Cross Reference panel that corresponds to the cross-reference shown in the current document view, which can be helpful to position a cross-reference in the Cross Reference panel. - Click the
or
icon to enlarge or reduce the text size of the names of all the cross-references in the Cross Reference panel. - Click the
icon and select an option to specify the display order of the cross-references in the Cross Reference panel.
Tip: You can do more operations after right-clicking a cross-reference in the Cross References panel.
