Manage chats within Foxit PDF Editor (Supported on Windows, macOS, and the cloud)

By Cynthia, 18 December, 2025

The AI Assistant within Foxit PDF Editor automatically saves your chat sessions, even after you close the application, so you can easily return to previous conversations, whether they involve documents or general questions.

You can manage chat history associated with different documents. When you chat with the AI Assistant while a document is open, the conversation is saved together with that document. This allows you to continue your work seamlessly without losing context. Each document keeps its own chat history, and reopening the same document loads the chat history automatically. The following steps are based on the AI Assistant within Foxit PDF Editor for Windows.

  • To access a document’s chat history, go to the Chats tab on the Start page of Foxit PDF Editor, select the document from the document list, and open it. Then open the AI Chat panel to view the chat history.

  • To remove a document’s chat history, select the document from the list in the Chats tab on the Start page, and click the Delete icon above the list. (Note: Changing a document’s storage path will cause its chat history to be lost.)

The AI Assistant also saves chat history that is not tied to any document (i.e., chats started without opening a file). You can return to these conversations in the AI Chat panel when no documents are open or when you are on the Start page of Foxit PDF Editor. These chat sessions are useful for asking questions, brainstorming, or getting help unrelated to a specific PDF.

You can manage your chat history from the menu that appears after clicking the Information icon at the top of the AI Chat panel:

  • Clear History: Remove all previous interactions linked to the currently open document, or all interactions not linked to any document (i.e., your entire chat history when no document is open).

  • Clear All History: Remove all previous interactions across the application, whether associated with documents or not.

  • Temporary Chat: Enable a temporary chat session. Temporary chats are not saved in history, used for memory recall, or included in AI model training.

Note: Chat history does not share across platforms, even when you sign in with the same account.
